Discover Your Library - 2021 Summer Youth Program

Welcome to the Library's 2021 Summer program for families and youth.  Beginning July 7th through August 6th, the Library will be celebrating summer with fun challenges, creative Grab & Go crafts, and special prizes for library patrons.

It's easy to participate!  Youth by select any five (5) challenges, complete them, and enter their name for a chance to win the Grand Prize Kindle Drawing.  But that's not all...participants can also win additional prizes by completing the challenges.

The four-week program is free and open to the public.  Residents in all communities are welcome to participate in the program.  Participants can pick-up a booklet at the Children's Desk.  Save the booklet to know what challenges are completed. When five (5) challenges are completed on or before August 6th, return the booklet to the Children's Desk, and use it to enter the Grand Prize Kindle Drawing, using the entry form at the back of the booklet.  Winner of the Grand Prize will be announced on August 9th.

OMNI/Libby and eReadIllinois...Especially for You

The Library offers two eBook/eAudio platforms - OMNI/Libby and eReadIllinois - for easy checkout and access to popular titles.  Download a title and enjoy!  When you "return" the book, check the line and include the book title.  After completing the challenge, keeping reading for fun!  This is a convenient service, and a really great way to get the book you want to read, even if the Library print copy is checked out.

Hidden in Plain Sight

There are three (3) glass cases displays on the lower level of the Library. Two (2) are in the foyer and one (1) is located in the Children's Room.  These displays sometimesa promote authors, book series, events, or interesting topics that patrons may enjoy.

In each display case, there is an item or items that does/do not belong.  The items will be changed and/or relocated, with each case, each day.  Find the items in the cases.  Note what the item is, and which case.  After completing the challenge, keep playing for fun through August 6th.

Read for Fun...and Gift Books!

Read or be read to 15 minutes each day - books, recipes, magazines, etc. - for one (1) week.  Once the challenge is completed, keep reading!  Every Friday, between July 7th and August 6th, stop in at the Children's Desk to pick out a gift book.

Somebody Fun to Know

The Library has a wonderful collection of "picture book" biographies...just enough to learn about fascinating (cool, awesome) people, and not so much for a huge report.  Read and enjoy a biography or autobiography.  When you return the book, check the line, and write the title of the book.

Open eBook - a New Book Platform

With books only for youth, this is a great place to find all of your favorite series books and authors.  Brought to you by the Library's partner, First Book, the new service lets you download a free app, then access your choice of eBooks for 56 days per book!  That is amazing.  Because elementary and middle school books sometimes overlap, you will be granted access to both eLibraries.

Download the free app (Open eBooks) from your app store. After this is downloaded, visit the Library to obtain the codes for the eLibraries.  After that, choose and enjoy your books - up to 10 titles at once!  When you visit the Library to get your codes, pick out a gift book.

My Favorites in the Library

Whether it is a special book, Dog Man, or a special section, Dinosaurs, or type, Biographies or Nonfiction, or even a place, for example, the Loft, or Backyard Wilderness, or the Rockers, take at least nine (9) "favorites" pictures in the Library with your cellphone.

Send your "favorites" photos to Library staff at rblomquist@lasalle.lib.il.us. Be sure to give the staff your name and phone number, in the email, along with the photos.  If you need a device to take and send the photos, let staff know.  We have device (s) that can be used.  Once your photos are submitted, the Library staff will create a personal poster using your favorite  photos, and will let you know when it is ready for pick-up.

Little Free Libraries (LFL) -  We're in the Neighboorhood

The Library stocks five Little Free Libraries with a variety of books, sometimes movies, and even magazines for you to keep or return to the LFL you choose.  During the Summer Program, each LFL will be stocked with a coupon.  Visit one or more of the LFLs around town and exchange the coupon at the Children's Desk at the Library for a Mini Delights - an assortment of fun trinkets, toys and games.  A list of LFL locations can be found on our website, under Community Projects, or ask a staff member.

Grab & Go Craft Kits

Be creative this summer! Grab a free youth craft kit (while supplies last) every Wednesday during the Summer Program.  These are always quick to go, so plan to come in early to get your kit.  Complete your craft and post a photo on Facebook, or send us the photo via email to Library staff at rblomquist@lasalle.lib.il.us.

Mystery Books - Discover Something New

Enjoy something new this summer!  A great way to encourage the importance and pleasure of reading is by sharing a story with the entire family.  Choose a "mystery book" -- staff selected and wrapped -- from the top shelf of the fire truck and read it as a family.  After the challenge is completed, keep trying "something new" over the summer by stopping in a choosing another "mystery book."

NASA GLOBE Observer: Trees Challenge (Family Project)

Love science and nature?  Here's your chance to participate in the NASA GLOBE Observer Tree program!  This program is an app-based tool that will help you estimate tree height.  The primary information that scientists hope to capture is the height and location of the trees that you observe.  Download the free NASA GLOBE Observer app from your app store and create a free account.  Then get started making observations and doing science!  The app will guide you through the observation process.

Upload your data using the NASA GLOBE Observer Tree app.  Take a photo of the tree that you measured and send it via email to Library staff at rblomquist@lasalle.lib.il.us.  Then, visit the Children's Room desk at the Library to receive your craft kits that accompany this Challenge - a rock painting tree identification craft and a recycled (and recyclable) origami collection Nature armband.

More Summer Fun @ the Library!

Throughout the summer, the Library will have more fun things to make with additional Grab & Go kits, free coupons to local restaurants, and an opportunity to get a free ticket to a Peoria Riverman Hockey Team opening weekend game in October.   Every Thursday, during the summer, stop in at the Library to pick something out of the Mini-Delight basket!  We have hats, toys, puzzles, games, science kits, etc.
