Enlightening and Inspiring Generations with Generations of Ideas

Children's Department

Welcome to the Children's Department of the LaSalle Public Library!  Our collection has a wide variety of resources for library patrons aged birth to 8th grade and their families, caregivers and teachers.

Board Books - for very young readers. Perfect for those just learning about holding a book and turning pages.  Many of our board books are tactile or with a sound component to engage in an interactive way.  These books are housed in the Book Nook, an inviting special place where kids can easily find and "read" books and are identified by a green striped spine label.

Picture Books - our picture book collection are a great resource for read-alouds and child/adult sharing.  The collection includes favorites like Clifford, Curious George, Fancy Nancy, Pete the Cat, and Fly Guy as well as thousands of other stories, some with an included audio of the author reading the text or music.

Readers - for newly independent readers.  Our readers are shelved separately, but not by level, and are easily identified with either orange and white striped spine labels or plain orange.

Juvenile  - independent chapter books for elementary and middle-school readers.  The collection includes many series books, for example the wildly popular My Weird School, Sophie Mouse, The Series of Unfortunate Events, Spiderwick, Big Nate, Wimpy Kid, Warriors, and Amulet as well as thousands of stories at various reading levels and genres--mystery, adventure, romance, historical fiction, humor, fantasy, and science fiction.  Many of the books in the collecton support Accelerated Reader (AR) requirements.

Non-Fiction - books that resond to curious minds and that provide information for schoolwork and reports are available, as are reference materials.  Staff are ready to help patrons find the information that they need whether for school assignments or personal interest.  Due to space limitations, our non-fiction materials for children are housed on moveable, rolling shelves.

Biographies - Vivid writing, eye-catching artwork, unforgettable true tales—these books have it all. Splendid for sharing aloud or reading independently, biographies introduce fascinating individuals, spark interest in diverse subjects, and encourage kids to think about their own lives and their place in the world.

Audiobooks - perfect for those summer vacations or just daily trips into town.

Bilingual - our collection includes English/Spanish, Spanish, English/Chinese, English/Cree, English/French, English/Dene, Esperanto, German, Hmong, Hmong/Chinese, English/Irish, English/Korean, English/Slovenian and Vietnamese.

Magazines -  our collection includes American Girl, Cricket, Lego Club, Muse, National Geographic for Kids, and Spider.  Magazines can be checked out or used at the Library.
