GLOBE Mosquito Habitat (Citizen Science)

Event Date:
Apr 11 2019 - 6:30pm

The LaSalle Public Library has been selected by the Institute of Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) as one of six national library test sites to pilot activities and resources related to NASA's GLOBE Observer program, an international network of citizen scientists and scientists.

YOU can become a Citizen Scientist by participating in one or all three GLOBE activities! These hands-on activities, investigations and resources will involve three subject areas: Mosquito Habitats, Clouds, and Land Cover.

GLOBE Mosquito Habitat

In GLOBE Mosquito Habitat, participants will learn about mosquitoes, and will idenify areas within the community that could potentially be areas for active mosquito populations.  Participants will also build mosquito traps, and study the species of mosquito that inhabit local areas.

GLOBE Mosquito Habitat will be offered in three parts. Part 1 and Part 2 will be offered on Tuesday, April 2nd and April 16th, at 6:30 p.m. OR on Thursday, April 11th, and April 25th, at 6:30 p.m.  Part 3 will be offered, collectively, on Saturday, April 13th, at 9:30 a.m.

GLOBE Mosquito Habitat activities will take place at the Library, and also in the field.  Field work will be at nearby sites; an information sheet will be distributed to participants.  Please wear suitable clothing and shoes for field work.

The activities are free, open to the public, and are for children, ages 8 and older, and adults.  Registration is required, as space is limited to 15 participants per paired day.  If you are a youth leader or teacher, and would like to participate as a class/group, please call the Library at 815-223-2341, or email: [email protected], to make arrangements.   You can register by phone (815-223-2341), by person, or by online registration.
