Free NASA Workshops for Formal and Informal Educators @ the Library

The LaSalle Library will host Susan Kohler, Education Professional Development Specialist at NASA Glenn Research Center, when she presents two free workshops for formal and informal educators on Tuesday, October 16th, and Wednesday, October 17th.  All activities meet Next Generation Science Standards. Registration deadline is on Friday, October 5th.

Workshops are: 

"Survival on Mars: The Martian - Five Engineering Design Challenges."  
Tuesday, October 16th, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

In this workshop, participants will learn to use the challenges of Space Exploration to help students improve collaborative skills, critical thinking, problem-solving strategies, and employ the process of science inquiry.  These challenges are easily adapted for all grades, and effective as stand-alones or units, activities include five hands-on challenges from the film, The Martian.

"Picking Up STEAM with NASA Science and Technology."
Wednesday, October 17th, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  

In this workshop, participants will tap into NASA technology to learn how to effectively use problem-based learning activities for students K-8.  This workshop demonstrates hands-on engagement strategies that use NASA data and images to enhance your STEAM program.  Participants will design a satellite, explore the scientific uses of satellite images, and will discover the many ways coding can extend student learning via Sphero robotics.

Both workshops are free.  Old Fashioned Box Lunches from Hy-Vee  may be ordered when you register or you may bring your own brown bag lunch.  Beverages and snacks will be provided.
