Enlightening and Inspiring Generations with Generations of Ideas

Celebrate the Solar Eclipse @ the Library!

Event Date:
Aug 21 2017 - 11:00am

Experience both LaSalle’s Hometown Eclipse—a fantastic 90% partial eclipse—and NASA’s amazing live coverage of totality via multi-site broadcasts for a Shared Solar Eclipse Experience on Monday, August 21st!

From 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. enjoy “Through NASA’s Eyes Eclipse Across America,” a live, large-projection broadcast offering amazing images taken before, during, and after the eclipse, using 11 spacecraft, at least three NASA aircraft, more than 50 high-altitude balloons, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station – each offering a unique view of the event. The unprecedented live coverage of the celestial event will begin with views from the International Space Station and conclude with coverage from a U.S. Coast Guard ship in the Atlantic Ocean, with coverage in between from parks, libraries, stadiums, festivals and museums across America, and on social media. “Through NASA’s Eyes Eclipse Across America,” will include coverage at the SIU campus in Carbondale, via NASA EDGE.

Between 12:15 and 2:15 p.m. the Library will also host the “DLN Live broadcast - E-Day 2017: Total Solar Eclipse Webcast,” from NASA’s Digital Learning Network. The Library will carry this webcast concurrently with “Through NASA’s Eyes,” via a second computer station. During this interactive webcast, viewers may use Twitter or email to ask questions of NASA experts.

More eclipse information – from pop culture to an understanding of how ancient peoples understood the solar eclipse, the newest lunar and solar satellites, multi-cultural folk tales and literature – can be enjoyed via additional interactive displays. The Library will have areas available outdoors, too, so bring your lawn chair, a sack snack and your solar eclipse glasses -- experience this awe-inspiring event with friends and neighbors. Beverages will be provided.

This is a free program, open to the public. Please note that the drive-through book drop will not be available between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The Library is located at 305 Marquette, LaSalle. For more information, please call the Library at 815-223-2341.
