An 18th Century Lady's Discourse on Plain Sewing & Fashion

Event Date:
Jul 25 2017 - 6:00pm

For more than 40 years, Cathy Grafton has worked with textiles--from quilts to tapestry, with silk ribbon embroidery and appliques. This artisan work expanded into knowledge as a historian of areas of textiles, and period fashions. In the unusual program, a trunk show, Cathy portrays a seamstress from the mid-1700s. Cathy discusses the styles and clothing in fashion at the time.

The program includes a brief history of the seamstress's "travels" from Scotland to France and eventually the New World. Participants may examine period needlework, along with antique sewing tools, antique quilts, and fabrics. This program is free and open to the public, and is made possible through funding from the Alwin C. Carus Trust.
